How to wear pleated trousers: five simple outfits

Pleated trousers sit at the natural waist and fall straight from the pleat. They look dressed up with almost no effort, which is the whole point. Five ways we wear ours.
1. Dinner by the sea
Beige trousers, a white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled, espadrilles. Leave the shirt open at the collar and tuck it in, so the pleats show.
2. The office
Navy trousers with a fine knit polo or a crisp shirt and loafers. Pleats and a pressed crease do the work a suit would, without the jacket.
3. The weekend
Black trousers, a plain white T-shirt tucked in, clean trainers or sandals. A belt is optional; the high rise looks good on its own.
4. Wide leg, tucked in
The women’s wide-leg trousers with a fitted vest top or a tucked shirt. Keep the top close to the body so the leg can be wide.
5. Wide leg, flat shoes
The wide leg is cut to fall to the floor in flat shoes or espadrilles. With heels it shows the shoe; with flats it pools a little, which is how we like it.
Getting the fit right
Choose by your natural waist, where trousers sit above the hip bone, not by the size of your jeans. Between two sizes, choose the larger: pleats need a little room to fall straight. The size guide has waist, hip and length for every size from XS to XXL.
